Bulua National High School History

It was in the year 1970 that high school education came to an open in barangay Bulua. Its beginning is rooted from collective efforts of the civic minded people and the barangay officials of Bulua who had felt the need to provide access to less expensive public secondary education to the constituents of the barangay especially  the less privileged. It started as a Barrio Night High School with two sections catering freshmen students and later had completed the four required levels until it had its first batch of graduates in 1974. The school then was governed and funded by the barangay with ten teachers most were part timers and one school-in-charge. Free secondary education was not yet realized then that students were made to pay tuition fees from which the salaries or if not honorarium of teachers were taken.

Unstable in terms of physical facilities for it did not have its own school site and even a school building, classes were held in elementary compound/classroom in the evening where they were tagged as “squatters”. Early in 1980’s High School buildings were constructed and classes were already held during day time but still within the elementary campus. It was then that the school was selected as a TRY OUT school for the integration of English and Science, Social Studies and Filipino subjects which was done as an experiment for three consecutive years. Enhancement for Barangay High Schools continued and in 1985 Bulua Barangay High School became a Pilot School for the 1989 proposed Secondary curriculum (SEDP) that was implemented in the school year 1989-1990. With the Nationalization of Barangay High Schools in the country, Free Public Secondary Education was realized that has affected the increase of enrolment in public schools. The latter has confronted the school with scarcity of resources to meet educational demands especially the physical facilities. A lot of efforts were spent to attract donors/sponsors for resource accessibility. In 1989 the school has acquired a site from Pedro Oloy Roa Foundation as donation through the help of Barangay Captain Pedro Legaspi. Progress in terms of plant and physical aspects of the school was made and by 1993 Bulua National High School has transferred to its exclusive compound along the National Highway at Zone 7, Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City.

Continuous school improvements has been made and the potential of the school has been recognized, indeed it has become a recipient of the Phil-Australia for Science and Mathematics Education Program (PASMEP) of which the school was given educational materials and equipment to be used for the learning process as well as training for teacher enhancement program. The school was also given an opportunity to join international training with the Philippine-Australia Project for Basic Education (PA-PROBE)   which established the TSU as one of the projects. The unit conducts training, seminars and symposium to enhance effective teaching in the field of Science, Math, and English to the high school students. The unit had created satellite schools that can also avail and be given opportunity to join the enhancement program.

Now it is a great pride of Bulua to have established a potential school for secondary education. It was never thought to have reached its success when it only started as a “squatter” in the elementary school compound and yet became an access of new learning enhancement programs, trainings, and seminars among other schools in the city.
